Chorizo burger with red pepper, Parmesan & fried egg (page 116)

Practical Playtime / Jobs For The Kids

  • Mix the burgers.
  • Peel the onions. Start your child off by cutting off the tops with a knife.
  • Take and shake the seeds out of the pepper.
  • Peel the garlic. Jake and James love banging it to loosen the skin first.
  • Sprinkle their Parmesan over the top.

My Cooking With Kids Recipe Diary

Jake 4 years 10 months, James 2 years 2 months

Jess and I ate this one on our own in front of the TV very late in the evening. Then I ate it on my own for the second test as they were all out. The chorizo I used was a dry one I bought from the supermarket; it was quite chewy which I really like and Jake does now too. James wouldn’t eat it mixed up in something last time I tried. But he did eat a thin slice when I passed it to him in the bath. I suggest taking the papery skin off before trying.

I find that it causes problems when there is a hard texture that they don’t expect inside of a soft texture. It is a good idea either to introduce these things slowly or just serve them separately from the start. I also don’t think it’s a problem if younger kids aren’t eating chorizo, keep it for yourself and get them used to the taste with a touch of smoked paprika mixed into their mince.
