My Cooking With Kids Recipe Diary

Jake 4 years 11 months, James 2 years 3 months

Joy and despair.

Joy! We had the version with cream and I left out most of the pepper and Jake loved the sauce. He loves mopping up sauces with bread like I do and he even had some of my fully peppered sauce. 'Wow that’s really spicy Daddy!' He also enjoyed the soft glazed vegetables.  Jess and I could dive into a cream sauce most evenings. We love them all from porcini to pepper and apples to asparagus so we were delighted that this was as much of a hit for Jake as it was for us.

Despair! James ate his potato and then wouldn’t touch anything else. He’d spent the day with Jess and a friend of hers who has a 2 year old on the same sort of food strike. They had a simple picnic in the park of boiled eggs, little sausages and tomatoes; James put everything from his plate onto Jess’s plate and then held his plate up and said 'finished Mummy, yoghurt now!!' He’s sometimes done something similar at the table here, but never before claimed to have finished. Faced with this it's impossible not to laugh. But then what do you do? You laugh but then you don’t give him anything else and he cries. Then you want to cry.
