- Peel the carrots with as much supervision your child needs. Jake peeled off the top today: 'Dad, I’ve peeled off the black bit for you.'
- Peel the garlic. Jake and James love banging it to loosen the skin first.
- Measure the gravy.
- Measure the water.
- Take the olive stones out. Teach them to do it by first pinching the tips, then squeezing out the stones. (This is a great job to teach them.)
- Squeeze the lemon.
- Measure the olive oil.

Jake 5 years 4 months, James 2 years 8 months
Oh hurray! My gosh! What joy! Calm down.
James ate this. He ate his pork, for the first time in more than eight tries while I’ve been cooking this chapter. He laughed.
'Delicious!!' he said.
He ate the carrots. He looked surprised, but 'delicious,' he said.
And I’d served this with some sprouts. He ate a sixth of a sprout and he didn’t spit it out. I don’t need to test this again but I am going to. Just to see if he’ll eat it all again.
For now I’ll enjoy the memory.
