My Cooking With Kids Recipe Diary

Jake 4 years 4 months, James 2 years 8 months

Both the boys loved the sticky chicken. I didn’t push it by giving James the fennel, but Jake has been eating it raw since about six months ago.

We’ve had a lot of success of late with James. He likes the chicken on the bone, so I gave him half a thigh and it is wonderful to watch him work out how to eat it. He pushed his fork into one end and held the other, but it kept slipping. We watch, help when he wants it but try very hard not to interfere. He's finding out what he can do and it is a treat to find out with him. I served rice with this and he picks it up little by little with his tiny fork, sometimes puts it into his hand before eating it. 'Delicious!' he shouts after a successful mouthful.

He would be quite happy to eat rice for every meal. A lot of the food I cook is highly seasoned and because I am almost constantly testing there is a massive variety. I’m fairly sure it would be easier for him if there was less, or a more gradual variety. For both my boys and I think secretly Jess, the days when I am just writing and they can have beans on toast are the biggest treats. 'Yippee!!!' they shout, when I tell them. Seriously, they actually chorus.
