Chipolata & chorizo skewers, tomato compote & polenta (page 180)

Switch & Mix

You can switch the tomato compote (page 177) for equal quantities of the soft, sweet, sticky onions (page 161). Add 2 extra tbsp of water in step 3. No other changes are needed.

You can also make the recipe with half soft, sweet, sticky onions and half tomato compote.

Practical Playtime / Jobs For The Kids

  • Wrap the chipolatas.
  • Measure the tomato compote.
  • Measure the water.
  • Peel the garlic, Jake and James love banging it to loosen the skin first.

  • Grate the cheese with as much supervision as they need.
  • Cut the butter with a butter knife.

My Cooking With Kids Recipe Diary

Jake 5 years 5 months, James 2 years 9 months

James is eating well but it is very stop start. We got out of the habit of feeding him some things because he just wouldn’t even try them and now he has never gotten used to certain textures. With this meal, he liked the polenta most of all, but he ate his chipolata with some bribery. I should have got him to help me wrap the chipolatas. Jake enjoyed doing this.

This one-minute polenta is brilliant, a lifesaver sometimes, and you have to remember, it is just corn, nothing else, so it is another way of them getting their veg! I need to find out how much a serving is in terms of the 5 a day. I’ll get back to you on this.
